What Is Beverage Formulation?
New to beverage formulation? Learn what to bring, how to describe your drink, and which ingredient preferences to discuss with BevForm.
Beverage formulation is the process of developing the recipe for your drink. It means choosing ingredients and working out how much of each to use. You don’t need a finished recipe or formulation experience to get started.

Start with your idea
Tell us what kind of drink you have in mind. It might be a juice, soda, seltzer, tea or something else. Who is it for, and when would someone reach for it?
You may have a clear idea, or just a starting point. Both give us something to discuss. The first conversation helps clarify what you want to make and which questions still need answers.
Bring a few drinks to compare
One of the most useful things you can bring is a few drinks that are similar to your idea. Include products you like and products you want to avoid, and tell us why.
Think about the flavor, how sweet or tart the drink is, how it feels in your mouth, and how fizzy it is. Is it light and crisp, thick and pulpy, or smooth and creamy? Does it leave an aftertaste you like or dislike?
You don’t have to like everything about a product. You might like the fruit flavor in one drink and the softer bubbles in another. For example:
“I want a lemon soda with the flavor of this one, but less sweetness. I like the bubbles in that one. I don’t like the aftertaste in this third drink.”
Bring the actual drinks when possible. If you can’t, share the product names, flavors, photos or links. These examples help us understand what you mean.
Share your ingredient preferences
Make two short lists if you already have ingredients in mind. It is fine to leave either list open.
Ingredients you would like to use
Specific ingredients you want to include or explore.
A preferred sweetener, or whether you are open to options.
Preferences for natural or artificial ingredients, including flavors and colors.
For a fruit drink, a preference for pure juice, concentrate or purée.
Ingredients you want to avoid
Specific ingredients, such as stevia, monk fruit or another sweetener.
Whole categories, such as artificial colors or artificial flavors.
Tell us why, and whether something is a preference or must not be used. You don’t need to know the best ingredient choice yet. That can be part of the conversation.
Share any needs you already know
Some needs go beyond taste. Let us know about:
Known allergens, allergens you need to avoid, and any dietary requirements or concerns about allergens during production.
Any rules, label claims or certifications the product needs to meet, plus where you plan to sell it. Bring any questions about compliance or regulations.
Anything already decided about packaging, sugar or calorie goals, budget or launch timing.
Share what you know and flag what you are unsure about. Allergen handling, labeling and regulatory questions need qualified technical or regulatory review as the project develops.
What happens next
The conversation helps build a product brief, a written summary of the drink you want to create. It gives formulation work a starting point.
As samples are developed, your feedback helps guide adjustments. Comments such as “less sweet,” “more tart” or “softer bubbles” are useful when tied to a sample or a drink you brought.
Getting a sample you like is part of the process. Product safety, shelf life and how the drink will be manufactured also need qualified technical review before launch.
